Westerly Community Credit Union Celebrates 10 Years Sponsoring School Financial Literacy Program
Westerly Community Credit Union is celebrating their 10th anniversary of sponsoring the Save for AmericaSM (SFA) School Savings Program in local elementary schools. A celebration is planned for September 17th from 9 am – 11:30 am at the Westerly (Granite St. office only), Richmond and South Kingstown branches. Parents and children are invited to enjoy games, enter a raffle to win $100, decorate a t-shirt (while supplies last), and open new SFA accounts.
Westerly Community Credit Union’s sponsorship of the SFA School Savings program started in 2006, when a parent inquired about the possibility of WCCU creating a financial literacy course at her child’s school in Westerly. After some research, WCCU discovered the SFA program and was impressed with how it teaches children in elementary school that saving can not only be educational, but also a lot of fun! WCCU piloted the program that year in (2) Westerly schools: State Street and Dunn’s Corners Elementary Schools. Today, WCCU sponsors this program in (10) elementary schools in Westerly, South Kingstown, Narragansett, Richmond, and Ashaway with over 600 students participating on average yearly.
“Financial Literacy is a very important focus for Westerly Community Credit Union and this program is a great way to introduce the idea of saving to our youth,” stated Stephen White, President/CEO of Westerly Community Credit Union. “We hope to help provide our youth the tools they need now, to achieve financial success when they are adults. We look forward to sponsoring financial literacy programs for years to come.”
