WCCU, Chariho High School and Westerly High School team up for the 2nd Annual CU4Reality Financial Literacy Fair

Students from Chariho High School in Wood River Junction, Rhode Island, and Westerly High School in Westerly Rhode Island, will be learning the reality of their financial choices and making real-life decisions to help teach them financial skills during the CU4Reality Financial Literacy Fair on Monday, May 21st, 2012.

Sponsored by Westerly Community Credit Union, the CU4Reality Financial Literacy Fair is an event that will give Chariho and Westerly High School students a chance to see how career selection impacts their financial well-being and their life choices. Students will create a spending plan based on a salary and career they have already researched, and juggle needs-versus-wants to make sure they are living within their means.

Students will then meet with representatives from local auto dealerships, insurance agents, lenders, utility providers, retailers and others, to help them understand the real expenses they will face in adulthood and the choices they’ll need to make to avoid falling in to debt.

‘Financial literacy has been a major focus for our Credit Union for years and this program is a positive addition to our existing programs’, stated Steve White, Westerly Community Credit Union President and CEO. ‘Our hope is to teach our young adults the importance of good financial management, so they will have a financially secure adulthood.’

The CU4Reality Program was created by a coalition of credit unions through America’s Credit Union Museum. Teachers use an in-class curriculum during the school year to teach students important skills that will equip them to handle money responsibly, set and adhere to budgets, and avoid the pitfalls of debt. Additionally, presentations to reinforce the curriculum are conducted throughout the school year by teachers and Westerly Community Credit Union employees, focusing on topics such as Savings and Investments, Checking accounts, Loans, Credit, Online Banking, and Budgeting.
